Hi all, hope ive posted this in the right place! Ive recently posted about golilumab not working etc etc and mentioned about the problem Im havbing with sciatica at the moment. Has anyone else had this at all and cn it be related to RA at all? Ive had sciatica in the past but it went fairly quickly. the pain im feeling is so bad right down my buttock, leg, calf and foot! It wakes me at might sometimes its so bad!

Ive read somewhere that it does just "right" itself, but has anyone got any suggestions etc? Im currently waiting to hear from the physiotherapist in the hope that they can refer me for an mri scan (this was following advice from the rheummy nurse) as she thinks a fall I had 2 years ago may have triggered something. Apparently thats the route you have to go for an mri scan via the physio.

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks, hope you are all well and keeping warm!

Hi Heather - sorry to hear that you've got sciatica pain - that can be very distressing. Getting a scan or an x-ray is a good idea, and the physio would be a good person to get you checked out. Do you have access to a multi-disciplinary team through your rheumatology dept? If you've seen the physio before then they should see you again but you might have to keep pushing and phoning to get seen quickly.

In the meantime, have you tried alternating hot and cold on your back? I use a hot water bottle for 10 minutes, followed by an ice pack for 10 minutes and then keep switching it around, and also I try to keep moving, because I'm advised that gentle movement is the best treatment. But obviously don't do too much.

Best wishes - Sylvia xx

Hi sylvia, thanks for the reply. Yes Ive tried that and it does ease it a bit. My husband went out today and bought me a tens machine from Argos. Ive tried it once and it did ease it so I'll try again before bed and hopefully I'll have an "all nighter" which in the old days to me used to mean and all night party, but now unfortunately means a night when I havent had to get up and have a wee!!!

Hi Sylvia, I can definitely recommend them! I hae used it quite a bit over the weekend and it has definitely made an improvement thankfully! Im going to start usingit today on my left leg as the pain is going all the way down, so if it does a good a job as it did on my back then Im really pleased! The best £24.99 Ive spent so far!!

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Love

Heather xxxx

Heather, I'm sorry to hear of your sciatica pain. I had this in the past as a result of a skiing accident. Luckily mine has healed now, but I remember the pain. I don't know if this could be caused by RA but it does need treatment. I hope you can get an MRI very soon so that they can see what's going on in there. Maybe you have a slipped disc. Good luck and let us know how you get on, X
